Two Arabic inscriptions from Bilet (Eastern Tigray, Ethiopia)

Par Julien LOISEAU  (Aix-Marseille Université, IREMAM, ERC HornEast)

The Office for Tourism and Culture in Tigray (Mekelle, Ethiopia) preserves in its museum two fragments of Arabic stelae. These basalt stones belong to the corpus of Bilet, a Muslim cemetery in Tigray, from which 15 inscriptions have been already published and 21 stelae recently found in survey by the Franco-Ethiopian mission of Bilet. These two fragments are of unequal importance. The main one bears the oldest Arabic inscription from Ethiopia known to date.
